Italy 2013… Day 3… Campania…

Started the day with breakfast at the hotel cafe…checked out…then drove 2 hours to Benevento… a picturesque, historic city (and one of my favorites) in Campania…we walked the stone and marble streets until we found a little pizzeria…had antipasti, pasta, pizza, and beer…a perfect lunch… walked off that lunch with a little site seeing and then drove to the Hotel Italiano, checked in, and meet Lorenzo from the Nifo Winery. We all drove together back to the winery for a vineyard tour…lead by Erasmos…Lorenzo’s father…proud farmer and grape grower…after a little side trip to the village of San Lupo…we went back to the winery for a tour…and a tasting of the Falanghina del Sannio Spumante Brut…delicious…then we moved on to the family residence for a home cooked meal prepared by Rosa… the Family Matriarch. Nifo is a family farm where all the food is prepared from scratch…first coarse…hand rolled Gnocchi with a tasty tomato sauce and hearty bread… paired with 2012 Nifo Falanghina IGT and 2011 Falanghina…next course…sausage links…meatballs, wild boar, breaded mushrooms and rabbit skewers and fresh peas grown between the rows of grapevines paired with 2012Nifo Aglianico IGT and 2009 Aglianico 2 very tasty and different expressions of the historic grape that both went really well with the meat…time for a refreshing green salad to cleanse the palate…and the Rosa grilled lamb in the dining room fireplace over dried grape vines and wood…absolutely fabulous…paired with 2002 and 2008 Nifo Aglianico D’Erasmo a reserve bottling that Lorenzo named after his father…2 amazing wines that were a very nice compliment to Rosa’s cow’s milk cheese…a perfect ending to a perfect day spent with another proud family maintaining the heritage of their region…
