Italy 2013…Day 7…Vinitaly Day 2…

Up and on the road at 9:30… morning rush hour in Verona rivals any city in the United States…got to the fair 1/2 hour late to our first appointment with La Monacesca… fortunately our host… Aldo…knows the Vinitaly traffic well and was graciously understanding…first wine of the day…2011 La Monacesca Verdiccio…this wine wakes up your taste buds with it’s crisp, clean, perfectly balanced fruit, minerality and acidity…great way to start the morning…then on to the 2010 Mirum…a reserve bottling of Verdiccio that Aldo condiders his best vintage in 20 years…then we tasted a truly special wine… the 2008 Mirum 20th Anniversary Cuvee…the last of the whites was Aldo’s take on white burgundy…the 2008 Ecclesia Chardonnay…followed by his only red wine…the 2009 Camerte…a truly beautiful blend of Sangiovese Grosso and Merot…gteat wines from Matallica in the Marche…now on to Tuscany, the Losi Family and Querciavalle Winery which has been making wine since 1870…our visit started with their award winning olive oil…bread, cheese, salami…and the 2012 Famiglia Losi Bianco Dell’ Etruria Centrale… a nice crisp, refreshing, dry white wine that readied us for the complete line of wonderful red wines from Chianti Classico… 6 in all…and Vin Santo…all of the Querciavalle Wines…and the Losi Family…are wonderful…then we went to visit our old friends at Casa Emma…also of Chianti Classico…tasted 5 really great wines…and a little olive oil…then on to Piemonte and the wines of Vietti…tasted 13 wines with them before moving to Valpolicella and the wines of Tenuta Sant’ Antonio… 3 whites and 4 reds…all great wines…last stop… Calabria, and the wines of Garrubba…tasted 6 new and exciting wines…don’t have much experience with wines from that area, but I am especially fond of the Ciro… 8 hours and 45 wines later our work day is over… Our reward for our work was an amazing dinner at the Winery and Vineyard of Monte del Fra (see the picture below)…our hosts, Silvia, Marica, and the rest of the Bonomo family made sure the we had a wonderful end to another amazing day in Italy…
