Italy 2013…Day 8…

Vinitaly…Day 3… Started at 10:00am with coffee at the Cantina Frentana booth with Felice…then we tasted through their whites from Abruzzo… 2012 Terre Valse Pecorino IGT…2012 Passerina, 2012 Cococciola… Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo (Rose)… 2012 Cococciola Spumante Brut and Pecorino Spumante Extra Dry… these wines were all bright and fresh…great wines for tasting at 10:00am…on to the reds… 2011 Terre Valse Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo… 2011 Montepulciano Biologico and 2010 Costa del Molino Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo… whew! Next appointment…Cantine Montfort in Trentino… Trentino is in Northern Italy where…besides Pinot Grigio, they grow some lesser know indigenous grape varietals…we started by tasting the 2012 Cantine Montfort Pinot Grigio Rose…yes…Rose…they make their Pinot Grigio in the traditional style with plenty of skin contact…this makes for a light pink color and much more flavor, gorgeous wine…then on to their Gewurztraminer…a very aromatic, clean, dry style, which was very pleasant…then we tasted Marzemino, Saint Laurent (or San Lorenzo, Teroldego Rutaliano, Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir), Cru Pinot Nero… After that we went to visit our old friend Umberto Soletta of Tenute Soletta from Sardegna…we tasted through 10 different expressions of Vermentino and Cannonau…all of them were really tasty…as always…off to Tuscany and the wines of Casanova di Neri…in Montelcino…2011 Il Rosso, 2010 Pietradonice Cabernet di Toscana, 2008 Brunello di Montalcino “White Label”, Brunello Tenuta Nuova, and 2007 Brunello Cerretalto which was gorgeous… 7 more red wines from them, some amazing olive oil and then on to the Selvapiana from Chianti Ruffina…tasted 7 wines from them…then meet with Cantina di Venosa from Basilicata and tasted 9 wines from them…over 50 wines…time to call it a day…now on to dinner at La Griglia Ristorante-Pizzaria in the village of Pedemonte with Salvatore La Lumina of the La Lumina winery in Sicily for a delicious dinner of grilled meat and vegetables with 6 Sicilian Wines…got to bed at 1:00am…another great day in Italy…
