Abby Freethy is the Northwoods Gourmet Girl…and every once in a while she’ll call me and say “Hey, do you want to go on TV with me tomorrow and talk about wine?” That is the call that I received on Wednesday afternoon. This time, I said yes without hesitation…after all…this was an 8:30 am “taping”… Not a 5:30 am “live segment” like we did back in November…so much easier. Abby gave me a quick overview of what she would be preparing, and left me with the task of choosing a couple of wines that would pair well. The next morning, I arrive at WABI TV 5 with my two bottles of wine, and meet Abby and Wayne Harvey in the studio… Our first dish of the day was an Asparagus,Mango and Prosciutto salad… Abby made a vinaigrette with the white wine that I chose from Northern Italy (where asparagus is in season right now)… 2011 Tenute Sant’ Antonio Scaia Garganega/Chardonnay. This wine has asparagus notes on the nose, (similar to Sauvignon Blanc),with bright, rich fruit and a soft fruit finish. It has the weight to stand up to the asparagus, is dry enough to compliment the sweetness of the mango, and fruity enough to offset the salty characteristics of the prosciutto. A very nice pairing. Our next dish was pan seared scallops with English pea soup. The white wine that I chose also paired very well with this dish, but I wanted to show off a red wine, so I brought the 2011 Tenute Sant’ Antonio Corvina. Corvina is one of the grapes in Valpolicella (which is where these wines are made). On its own, Corvina is light, soft, and fruity, with a hint of black pepper on the finish. This is a great, all purpose, summer weight, food wine that went exceptionally well with the scallops and pea soup…it was also a great match with the dark chocolate pudding that Abby made. Did I mention that she made chocolate pudding…with whipped cream from scratch? Well, she did, and the staff at WABI will attest to the fact that it was delicious. You can see the Northwoods Gourmet Girl on the WABI TV5 morning news, every other Monday.
