Farm to Table Dinner at the Lucerne Inn with White’s Farm

Every year around this time we hold a Harvest Wine Dinner at the Lucerne Inn. It just makes sense…celebrating the Maine Harvest by showing off all that is good from our local farms. This year we featured just one Farm… White’s Farm from Winterport. What made this evening even more special was we actually meet…and dined with our farmer. Michelle Byram of White’s Farm…along with her family and friends…Michelle was our host for what turned out to be a wonderfully delicious evening… Like many farms in our area the White’s Farm grows a wide variety of vegetables…and they also raise pigs…so the Chef at the Inn was able to write a menu featuring a lot of what they produce on the farm. My contribution… was pairing some of my favorite organic wines from Italy with each course… First Course… Fried Green Tomatoes with Braised Pork Belly…yum! The light crispy batter on the tomatoes and the pork belly worked perfectly… and paired nicely with the 2012 Casata Monfort Pinot Grigio Rose’ from Trentino…Second Course… Bolognese with Spaghetti Squash… delicious… paired with 2009 Nifo Sarrapochiello Aglianico del Taburno from Campania…the wine and the sauce complimented each other perfectly… Third Course… Savory Pork Sausage with Clams and Garlic…pairing with garlic can be very challenging… So, I chose one of the most forgiving White Wines that I know… 2010 La Monacesca Verdicchio di Matelica from the Marche…this big lush white wine can stand up to anything… and it really paired well with this course… Sorbet for Intermezzo…and the the Main Course… Oven Roasted Pork Chop with Fig Jam, New Potato blend and Fresh Vegetables… hearty and delicious…paired with 2011 San Savino Rosso Piceno from the Marche…this blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano was a perfect marriage with the pork and roasted vegetables…whew! So far…so good… Dessert… Husk Cherry Ice Cream with an Apple Fritter and 2012 Montesel Prosecco Superiore…the bubbles and crisp fruit paired perfectly with the apple and cleaned the ice cream off our tongues…and left everyone smiling and content…a wonderful finish to a wonderful evening…If this sounds appealing to you…or makes you hungry…Our next Dinner is on October 10th…contact the Lucerne Inn for details.
