Big Night…at Cleonice Mediterranean Bistro…

Big Night…is a movie that came out in 1996 starring Stanley Tucci, Tony Shaloub, Isabella Rosselini…and a cast of other well known actors. It is on the short list of must see “foodie” movies. It is a great movie that tells a great story… Cary and Rich Hanson recreate the closing feast scene at Cleonice every January…and what a Big Night it was… Cary and Rich created a delicious 6 course meal that was fit for a King…or Louis Prima…and fortunately they get along much better as husband and wife than the brothers Primo and Secondo do in the movie…George Schwartz of Kimera Imports was our host for the evening and paired a wine with each of the 6 courses…Antipasti Uno…Grilled Baby Octopus Salad…Caponata with Bruschetta & Harmony Mills Young Parmesean with Castelvetrano Olives…with a wine from Sicily…2012 Gorghi Tondi Grillo Kheire…this rich expression of the Grillo grape went perfectly with this course… George knows more about Italian Wine and Cuisine than anyone I know…so this was no surprise…Antipasti Due…Stuffed Calamari & Arancini with Peas…paired with 2012 Terra Mia Lacrima Christi del Vesuvio Rosato…yes…a rich flavorful Rose’ Wine from Campania…perfecto! On to the Primi…Roasted Whole Hake a “Bandierina della Italiano” with Salsa Verde & Salsa Rosso…paired with 2011 Gorghi Tondi Nero d’Avola Costa a Preola…White Fish with Red Wine…that’s how they do it in Sicily…and it was delicious…the Pasta Course…was the Timpano…taken straight from the movie…and unlike anything I have ever experienced…a cornucopia of pasta and goodness…baked in a large pastry drum…yum…and George chose the 2012 Terra Mia Lacrima Christi del Vesuvio Rosso…red wine from Campania…again…not surprisingly…a perfect pairing…now for the main course… Secondi…Roasted Whole Native Pig stuffed with Herbs with a Contorno of Broccoli Rabe…without a doubt…the best serving of pork that I have ever had…paired with 2007 Casal Bordino Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva…wow…just…wow…yes there is more…Dolci…Baba au Rhum with Candied Blood Orange…now I am not a big desert person…and the last course made my night complete…but this dessert put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces…and it was delicious… a perfect way to end a perfect evening…we deviated from the Italian Wine theme for just one course…we showed off a very special Port from deep in the cellar…no one complained that it wasn’t Italian…and it was wonderful…a Feast…to end all Feasts… The next Wine Dinner at Cleonice will be on Sunday March 30th at 6:00pm…Chris Campbell of C&P wines will be hosting an evening of Spanish Wine and Cuisine…call 664-7554 for reservations and menu information
